This past year we took 23 8th graders from Roseway Heights, the same number I took on the very first trip, on another historical adventure. Great students, an inviting learning environment, and a very successful trip. The goals of the trip have always been the same; offer students an educational trip where they get to immerse themselves in the history of our country through study, group interaction and finally, a trip that allows students the chance to witness where history "happened".<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We want to thank the 700+ students who have traveled with us over the years, their parents who worked diligently on fundraisers so their children could have this experience. We would also like to thank all the teachers, principals, and benefactors who worked behind the scenes to help some very special students attain their goals of being members of a travel study group.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
There comes a time when even the best activities, trips or experiences must be passed on to others and that time has come for the Paths To Our Past trip for Roseway Heights students. Stacey and I will no longer be offering the trip and hope that a qualified teacher or parent will carry on the tradition of an educational 8th grade east coast program.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Thanks for all the memories,
We started off at Ellis Island and then this was the first group to visit the 9/11 memorial. It was amazing to see and made a big impact to a group of students who were about four years old when the towers fell and we were there on Memorial Day and saw several men and women in uniform. The kids then saw Wall Street and ate lunch at the South Street Sea Port and it was off to 5th Ave, though you can tell the amazingness of 5th ave has worn off, there aren't many stores any more and not really anything people can afford though they all liked FAO Schwartz.

Then we had a nice bus ride off to Amish country where they had fun swimming and eating pizza. We then read a few books and had a writing activity.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11070906959916446760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4781275497018740915.post-57241283865785286112012-05-29T16:16:00.001-07:002012-05-29T16:16:48.348-07:00Photos<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11070906959916446760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4781275497018740915.post-76925158385745512512012-05-27T20:05:00.001-07:002012-05-27T20:05:51.588-07:00Sunday, May 27th NYCThis morning the kids all got up and were ready to go on time! We loaded the bus up to head to NYC, saying goodbye to Boston :(

Kids loved NYC! We saw Mary Poppins at the New Amsterdam theatre, it was a great performance and we had nice seats! Next the kids stormed the Hard Rock Cafe and experienced the fun atmosphere of Times Square on Memorial weekend with many, many sailors to help remind them what Memorial day is really all about. We stopped in to the M&M store and then had a group photo in Times Square, now the kids are settled in to their rooms for the night and we have had a mini lightening storm!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11070906959916446760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4781275497018740915.post-37049511423331009522012-05-27T19:59:00.001-07:002012-05-27T20:01:13.174-07:00BostonKids had a blast today (well yesterday since this didn't publish last if hotline I thought), we ran around Boston following most of the freedom trail with stops at old south meeting house, massacre site, Quincy market, Paul revere's house and old north church. We had dinner at one of my favorite stops, La Familia Gorgios in Boston's very Italian North End, delicious!! We then saw the USS Constitution and then off to the Blue Man Group where the kids really had a blast.

They are ready to hit the big NYC, many of them have said they still don't feel like they are on the east coast trip yet as they feel Boston has been very similar to good old Portlandia, as they have told people that is where we are from. I have to agree, Boston and Portland are similar but Portland still wins out in manners!!

We have had a few compliments on the kids already and how great they
are! We even met a few teachers today from Chicago who were extremely impressed with the work book the kids do, our full itinerary, they thought it was a wonderful experience the kids would be getting and were jealous!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11070906959916446760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4781275497018740915.post-82794426701425054052012-05-25T22:00:00.001-07:002012-05-27T19:59:07.292-07:00Friday, May 25th - Boston areaHi everyone, I hope you are watching the facebook PTOP page as that is where the photos and most of the information is going because it is the easiest and fastest way for me to update on the go!

We had a fun filled day and I don't think many of the kids called home but i promise you all they are save and doing well and having fun but they are tired. They got to see Lexington and Concord this morning after having breakfast once we landed, then we went and saw the Mayflower 2 and up to Plimoth Plantation, then it was on to the Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway, the Sox lost but the kids got a chance to see a brief glimpse of the Harvard as it had still been semi set up for the 2012 commencement that happened on Thursday. Okay I am off to go to bed now, fun filled day of the Freedom trail in Boston tomorrow, watch for pictures!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11070906959916446760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4781275497018740915.post-26444206099068783542012-05-20T18:42:00.001-07:002012-05-20T18:42:03.541-07:00Parent & Student Meeting Tomorrow 5/21Reminder, our last meeting, mandatory for all students and at least one parent/guardian per student, in the multi purpose room/cafeteria at Roseway Heights at 6:00 pm.
We want parents and students to know that the Paths To Our Past Trip and Program will continue. We will have much more information about the upcoming 2012 trip this summer. Please check back often this July and August for updates about this years' trip. We would like to thank you for your hard work and dedication to this year's 25th annual Paths To Our Past East Coast Trip. The kids had a great time and were very well behaved. We received numerous compliments from airline personal, guides and the general public about how well behaved your kids were. It is a tribute to the community, schools and parents in the area; a great way to travel with such well prepared and well behaved students. We hope all students have a great summer, a successful transition to high school, and will keep the memories of Blue Man Group, Spiderman, and the history of our nation as a reminder of the talents and creativity that makes us all Americans.

The kids had a blast at the play Spiderman. Luckily we still got to see the play since they had a few technical difficulties (surprise, surprise) but it was actually really cool, we got to see a little sneak peak into the back stage workings of the flying that happens during the play. The kids were impressed and really had a great time, and the costumes were amazing, as was the set. We went on to have dinner at Hard Rock Cafe in the middle of Times Square. The kids had the opportunity to see TS in the daylight and then again at night, what a stark contrast it is being all lit up at night. We visited the M&M store and then had our picture professionally taken in Times Square with all the lights. After a fun evening we headed to our hotel where we were supposed to have a visit from a few of the Jersey Shore cast members, unfortunately Snookie and The Situation were double booked and so they sent their cousins Cookie and The Solution in their place..... fun times :) Pictures at www.facebook.com/pathstoourpast (you do not need a facebook account to view the pictures).
After walking around the plantation and engaging the actors in conversations the kids were ready for our wonderful Italian meal of lots of meatballs, alfrado, red ziti, chicken parmesean and of course some canoli's! After chowing down on dinner we headed over to Harvard to tour the Library and campus. Once we got back to the hotel room and the kids got settled in and we had a 'fire drill' and walked all the kids outside in their PJ's and then they got ice cream with all the fixings next door at the bowling alley/restaurant. Yum Yum!

Saturday took us out to Lexington and Concord following Paul Revere's route to warn that the British were coming. We then travelled in to Boston to being touring the Freedom Trail seeing Granary Burying Ground, Old South Meeting House, Faneuil Hall for lunch, Paul Revere's House, Old North Church with a tour of the bell tour and crypt and back to Faneuil Hall for dinner. We burned off dinner as we walked over to the Boston Commons to spend a little time writing and drawing our adventures from the day. The kids really took on the challenge and there are some neat pictures and stories! Next we went to Blue Man Group where the kids had a blast.

Now we are currently on the road to New York City to see Spiderman and have dinner at Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square!!
Below is the itinerary so you can follow the group as we travel through the states of the east coast!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11070906959916446760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4781275497018740915.post-72943969033474758222011-04-24T12:21:00.000-07:002011-04-27T13:25:45.953-07:00Ashland with the RWH 7th GradersHad a blast down in Ashland with Mr. Gentile and Ms. Wilson and many of the Roseway Heights 7th graders! We saw Julius Caesar in the New Theatre sitting in the round with a minimal set, then we saw the Imaginary Invalid in the Angus Bowmer Theatre which was a stark contrast in time period, theme, stage presence and costumes. I believe the kids enjoyed the Imaginary Invalid a little more than Caesar, and really, who can blame them, the Imaginary Invalid was very funny! Friday morning we were able to take a backstage tour and learn more about the Ashland Festival and all it entails and how the shows are turned into productions.
Have a fun and safe Easter!
